The rapidly deteriorating public security situation in Paraguay is leaving the government led by President Horacio Cartes open to growing public criticism and to increasingly damaging attacks by the political opposition. The latest of these attacks involve a move to subject Interior Minister Francisco de Vargas to impeachment proceedings in the national congress. Given that the Cartes government no longer enjoys the full support of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana – Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) bench in congress, there is a chance that the impeachment motion could succeed, delivering a major political blow to the government.
