The US embassy in Haiti has issued a statement strongly condemning armed attacks that took place on 23-24 June against several major international and local companies based in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The violence points to a deteriorating security situation. This is being blamed on the current institutional vacuum stemming from the national legislature’s continued failure to meet and discuss whether or not to extend the 120-day mandate of interim president Jocelerme Privert, which expired on 14 June. Privert’s mandate had been agreed as per the 5 February accord signed by former president Michel Martelly (2011-2016) and congress ahead of Martelly’s departure on 7 February in the absence of an elected successor. Privert maintains that he will continue in the post until the legislature has decided on his fate.End of preview - This article contains approximately 653 words.
