PERU: Military ‘victory’ called into question
An engagement last month with Sendero Luminoso (SL) guerrillas in Ayacucho, which the authorities presented as a victory that had claimed the life of a top SL military leader, has been recast in the media as a failure. In October an SL incursion into a town in the neighbouring region of Huancavelica calls into question the government’s reassessment of SL’s strength.
