VENEZUELA: Border measures to last beyond elections

President Nicolás Maduro has been extending the suspension of rights in border states for second 60-day stretches at the same time as his government has been claiming the success of border closures and the deployments of large-scale police operations across the country in reducing violence and economic losses due to smuggling. The opposition says that Maduro’s move is political, intended to hamper their ability to campaign in the legislative elections scheduled for 6 December.
