The government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto recently extradited 13 Mexican nationals from local prisons to the US. It was the first time that the Peña Nieto administration had extradited convicted Mexican criminals to the US before they served out their sentences in Mexico. Unlike his predecessor, Felipe Calderón (2003-2012), President Peña Nieto has been more reluctant to extradite nationals to the US, as part of a bid to reduce the level of US involvement in Mexico’s national security affairs; and to show that Mexico is up to task of bringing its own nationals to justice. Inevitably, these latest extraditions have sparked speculation that the Peña Nieto administration is trying to placate US frustration over the recent escape of the drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán from a maximum-security prison in Mexico.
