DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Gov’t submits strategic 2016 budget

The Dominican government led by President Danilo Medina has submitted its draft 2016 budget to the national congress. This is the final budget presented by the Medina government ahead of the May 2016 general elections. While the government has said that it will continue to promote fiscal discipline in order to achieve its objective of reducing to zero the 8.6% fiscal deficit it inherited, the RD$663.bn (US$14.6bn) draft budget is 7% higher than last year’s as the Medina administration has opted to boost spending in some key areas such as education and healthcare that have become a source of public concern. However, health sector representatives in particular are already complaining that the sector’s proposed budget is insufficient to meet their needs.
