TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Corruption, crime and the economy take their toll
The People’s National Movement (PNM) opposition, led by Keith Rowley, has ousted the coalition People’s Partnership (PP) government of outgoing prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The election, won by 23-18 seats, was much closer than the 29-12 seats victory that brought the PP to power in 2010; and the PP actually won the popular vote with its main component, the United National Congress (UNC), winning more seats than in 2010. But in the end the combined effects of a struggling economy, high crime, the taint of corruption, and (unluckily, because the PNM traditionally does better in a low turnout) a heavy rainstorm on election day put an end to Persad-Bissessar’s re-election hopes.
