Chile’s Bachelet beefs up prosecution amid public perception of rising crime

Development: On 17 August Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet promulgated a law to strengthen the national prosecution service to combat crime and insecurity.

Significance: President Bachelet is trying to improve her connection with the general public. Bachelet’s popularity has plunged since she took office as her government, and the political class in general, has appeared distanced from the everyday concerns of Chileans, something that has been compounded by long-running campaign finance irregularities and corruption allegations. Throughout July protesters staged so-called ‘cacerolazos for insecurity’, banging pots and pans and holding rallies in middle class and more affluent residential areas of the capital, Santiago, to demand that the government improve public security. A recent survey carried out by local pollster, Adimark, found that 86% of respondents disapproved of the Bachelet administration’s performance on combating crime.
