Significance: By mooting a meeting with Timochenko President Santos is demonstrating his determination to leave no stone unturned in his quest to expedite the peace process with the Farc. And this is just the latest in a series of controversial proposals by Santos in recent days. In an interview with the Colombian magazine, Semana, at the weekend (8-9 August) Santos proposed the creation of a ‘congresito’ (‘mini congress’) to regulate and implement any peace accords reached at the official peace negotiations with the Farc currently being held in Cuba. Santos had always suggested that a popular referendum would be held on an eventual accord with the Farc and his main adversary, Senator Alvaro Uribe (president from 2002-2010), the leader of the right-wing Centro Democrático (CD) political party, was quick to remind him of this.
