Cuba: On 28
July the Cuba Trade Act of 2015, a bill aimed at restoring US trade with Cuba, was introduced in the US House of Representatives by Congressman Tom Emmer (R-MN), and co-sponsored by Congresswoman Kathy Castor (D-FL). This legislation would lift the US’s economic embargo on Cuba, and allow private businesses to trade freely with Cuba, while prohibiting the use of taxpayer funds on promotion or development of this new market. The Cuba Trade Act is part of a wave of Republican-led initiatives to change US policy of engagement toward Cuba, including the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act, and the Cuba Data Act. According to the think-tank, Washington Office on Latin America (Wola), recent opinion polls by
CBS News, and the Pew Research Center indicate growing support among the US public, and Republicans in particular, for rekindling relations with Cuba.
