The centrist Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), the government’s main coalition partner, has inflicted a humiliating defeat on President Dilma Rousseff’s ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), snatching the presidency of the lower chamber of Brazil’s federal congress and breaking a longstanding agreement between the two allies to alternate the position.
