COLOMBIA: Confronting the ‘atomised’ Bacrims

President Juan Manuel Santos and his defence minister, Juan Carlos Pinzón, are claiming that the neo-paramilitary organisations they call ‘Bacrims’ (for ‘bandas criminales’, or criminal bands) are on their last legs. At a late March session of the security council held in Santa Marta, on the Caribbean coast, Santos said that the only Bacrim that still has a countrywide presence is Los Urabeños. Their main rivals, Los Rastrojos, are “ever more reduced”, he said.
