EL SALVADOR: Impact of ‘truce’ confirmed, US demurs

The recently expanded ‘truce’ between Salvadorean street gangs has sharply reduced the number of homicides to the lowest level since 1995, as well as those of other headline crimes such as extortion, robbery and theft. Even as the Salvadorean government has belatedly sought to claim credit for this development, the US response has been distinctly chilly: one of the participants in the ‘truce’ has been blacklisted, the State Department has warned against travelling to the country, and USAID has launched a rival scheme.
