BRAZIL: Local gang led Santa Catarina waves of violence

The second wave of violence suffered by Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina in the last four months was organised by a prison-based gang known as the Primeiro Grupo Catarinense (PGC), according to Aldo Pinheiro D'Ávila, chief commissar of the state’s civil police. What was only a suspicion in November, he said, is now a certainty.
