COLOMBIA: Surge of fighting, but negotiations continue

The end of the Farc’s unilateral ceasefire on 20 January was followed by a sudden surge of armed actions by the guerrillas, accompanied by the continuing attacks by the military. The Farc took hostage a soldier and two police officers. Its negotiators in Havana initially justified the taking of ‘prisoners of war’ but later agreed to release the hostages — which it did on 15 February. This surge did not lead to the suspension of peace talks in Havana.
