ECONOMIC OVERVIEW: GUATEMALA

Tourism up: According to a press release by the national tourism institute (Inguat) issued at the end of June, a total of 889,477 tourists entered the country between January and June this year, a 1.6% increase on the same period in 2011. Inguat estimates that revenue generated by the tourism sector reached US$650.6m, up 1.3% on the same period in 2011. In 2011, 1.8m foreign tourists visited the country, generating US$1.35bn in revenue. The Inguat is expecting a “significant increase” in tourists at the end of the year due to the 21 December celebrations marking the end of the 13th Baktun, a five-millennia cycle in the ancient Mayan calendar.
