At a 9 July ceremony to lay the first stone of a new Nissan car assembly plant Aguascalientes, President Felipe Calderón declared that Mexico has overtaken the US to become the world’s fourth vehicle exporter, having risen from ninth position in the past six years. He added that during his six year mandate, which ends on 31 November next, US$12bn has been invested or pledged by leading firms in the automobile industry. By 2016, Mexico may account for just under a quarter (24%) of total vehicle output in North America, on industry estimates.
