BOLIVIA: Morales tested by mining

A dispute over a mine in Potosí, regarding efforts by a subsidiary of Canada’s South American Silver (SASC) to develop what could become Bolivia’s biggest mine, is proving the latest example of the tensions caused by President Evo Morales’s efforts to develop Bolivia’s natural resources. Also indicative of the challenges posed by developing the mining sector, Morales was recently forced to send out the military in response to another mining dispute, this time triggered by his attempt to nationalise a mine.
