Haiti’s new prime minister, Laurent Lamothe, is racing ahead with bold initiatives for the country’s development. Making up for lost time after waiting two months for parliament to ratify his nomination by President Michel Martelly, Lamothe quickly launched a conditional cash-transfer scheme for mothers, modelled on other countries in Latin America, to alleviate poverty and improve education. He is also keen to draft mining legislation. Recent reports suggest that there might be, quite literally, a silver lining to the devastating earthquake in January 2010.
