EL SALVADOR: Gloves off as Funes goes before congress

President Mauricio Funes completed the third of his five years in power on 1 June with a combative state-of-the-nation address to the legislative assembly. He devoted most of his speech to defending his government’s economic record in the face of fierce criticism from the main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena), El Salvador’s chamber of commerce and, pointedly, the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), which brought him to power in 2009.
