PLD wins in the first round

The Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) has managed to secure a third consecutive presidential election in the Dominican Republic (DR). While the ruling party’s first round victory shows that even after eight consecutive years in power, support for the government led by the outgoing President Leonel Fernández is still strong, the party and especially Fernández’s elected successor, Danilo Medina, must not be fooled into believing that Dominicans are wholly satisfied with the PLD administration. The next government would be making a big miscalculation if it believes that it can carry on governing as it has done without addressing some pressing issues; to ensure a successful four-year term, Medina will have to tackle these sooner rather than later.
