The race for Mexico City’s mayoralty, the country’s second most coveted political prize after the presidency, officially began on 29 April. The election will be held concurrently with the presidential election on 1 July. While there are four candidates representing Mexico’s main political groups in both contests, the Mexico City contest is shaping very differently. In the presidential race, the frontrunner is the candidate for the opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) as Mexicans hanker for a change in the national leadership, yet in Mexico City continuity appears to be the order of the day.
