In brief: Brazil registers current account deficit in March

*Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released its latest figures for the country’s balance of payments, showing a current account deficit of US$4.6bn in March, in contrast to the surplus of US$698m in March 2023. The accumulated current account deficit for the 12 months until March totalled US$32.6bn (1.46% of GDP), down from the US$49.3bn (2.46% of GDP) registered for the preceding 12-month period. The trade balance of goods in March showed a surplus of US$5.1bn, a lower surplus than the US$9.3bn registered in March last year. Foreign direct investment (FDI) in March totalled US$9.6bn, up from US$7.3bn in March last year.
