In brief: Venezuela’s Maduro hails economic progress

*Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has announced that the country’s tax authority (Seniat) collected over US$3.1bn in taxes last year, which he said represented a 78% increase on the previous year. Maduro also highlighted Venezuela’s ongoing recovery from hyperinflation, saying that annual inflation is expected to be around 60% by the end of the year. According to the independent economic think tank Observatorio Venezolano de Finanzas (OVF), annual inflation in March was 89%, up from 85% in February.
