MEXICO: Sheinbaum untroubled in first debate

Claudia Sheinbaum emerged unscathed from Mexico’s first presidential debate on 7 April. Sheinbaum, who is bidding to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), is the clear frontrunner ahead of elections on 2 June, and she exuded a calm and controlled demeanour in the face of efforts by her principal rival, Xóchitl Gálvez of the main opposition coalition Fuerza y Corazón por México, to unsettle her. Gálvez will have two further opportunities to debate Sheinbaum but on this showing she will have her work cut out.
