ARGENTINA: Trade unions flex muscles over dismissals

Argentina’s President Javier Milei said this week that 70,000 public employees would be laid off at the end of March. The presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni subsequently maintained that his comments had been “misunderstood” and that only 15,000 short-term contract workers would be dismissed with another 55,000 given a contract extension for now. But the public sector lay-offs come as various economic indicators are fuelling worries over the degree of hardship that the population is now facing as a result of the economic crisis. The public sector employees’ union Asociación Trabajadores del Estado (ATE) has called strike action for 3 April.
