In brief: Spanish firm to expand major airport in Brazil

*Brazil’s minister for ports and airports, Silvio Costa Filho, has announced that Spanish airport operator Aena will invest R$2bn (US$402m) in expansion works for Congonhas airport in São Paulo, the country’s second busiest airport. The works are expected to conclude in 2028. According to a government press release, Costa Filho has requested Aena to prioritise completing half of the expansion by 2026. The national civil aviation agency (Anac) estimates that the expansion will increase Congonhas’ total annual passenger traffic from 22m in 2023 to 29.5m after the works are completed. The works will include seven new jet bridges for boarding gates, 215,000m2 for new hangars and an expanded apron (the area where aircraft is parked), and a 105,000m2 expansion of the departure terminal, which will feature a new check-in area, with 72 new check-in desks.
