In brief: Brazil’s gov’t projects annual contraction in farming

*The economic policy secretariat (SPE) of Brazil’s finance ministry has released the latest edition of its Boletim MacroFiscal report containing the secretariat’s economic forecasts, in which it projected the country’s GDP to register an annual growth rate of 2.2% in 2024. This growth projection remains unchanged from the previous edition of the report, which was released in November 2023. However, the SPE has since lowered its forecast for annual growth in the agricultural sector this year. The latest report predicted an annual contraction of 1.3%, in contrast to the growth rate of 0.5% projected for the sector last November. The growth forecasts for the industrial and services sectors in 2024, on the other hand, have seen slightly increases. The SPE has projected 2.5% annual growth for the industrial sector, up 0.1 percentage points from the November report, and 2.4% growth for services, up 0.2 percentage points.
