López Obrador accused of DTO links

On 22 February the New York Times (NYT) published a story about a shelved US investigation into potential links between the administration of Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). The NYT article followed media reports about a separate US investigation into alleged illicit financing of López Obrador’s unsuccessful 2006 presidential campaign, which were published on 30 January. The president has lashed out at the journalists responsible for the reporting and the US agencies that undertook the investigations in question. The reports have threatened to sour US-Mexico relations at a time when the US administration of President Joe Biden is counting on Mexico’s support in stemming migration flows and tackling fentanyl trafficking ahead of this year’s elections.
