In brief: Brazil’s retails sales rise in January

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for the country’s retail sales in January, which showed a monthly rise in sales volume of 2.5% and an increase of 4.1% compared to January 2023. The Ibge noted that the monthly rise in January came after three months of weak sales figures, as monthly drops were registered in October and December and a slight increase in November. In January this year, the categories of fabrics, clothing, and footwear (+8.5%) and office supplies, information, and communication (+6.1%) saw the highest monthly rises in sales volume. Five of the eight product categories registered monthly increases.
