In brief: Mexico records annual increase in air travel

*Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has announced that 10.20m passengers travelled by air in Mexico on domestic and international flights in January 2024, up from 9.98m in January 2023. According to a Sectur statement, 4.83m passengers travelled on domestic flights in January, down slightly from the 4.98m recorded in January 2023 but up 20.7% on January 2019, before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic disrupted travel. In terms of international flights, Sectur registered 5.37m passengers in January 2024, up 7.6% year-on-year and up 21.5% on the first month of 2019. The airlines that saw the greatest influx of passengers on domestic flights were local budget airlines Viva Aerobus and Volaris, with a total 3.49m passengers. Travel in North America accounted for 86.6% of passengers transported on international flights.
