In brief: Peru’s prime minister resigns

*Peru’s prime minister, Alberto Otárola, has resigned after coming under mounting pressure over leaked audio recordings in which he appeared to improperly offer a job to a woman with whom he had a romantic relationship. President Dina Boluarte was reported to be preparing to fire Otárola if he did not tender his resignation. Otárola yesterday insisted that the audio file had been manipulated and suggested that its leaking was part of a political plot by former president Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020). The same allegation had been made the previous day by the woman in question, Yaziré Pinedo Vásquez, who also pointed the finger at President Boluarte’s brother, Wigberto Nicanor Boluarte. No announcement has yet been made on who will replace Otárola as prime minister.
