In brief: Flights to Haiti cancelled as gangs try to seize control of airport

*Various airlines have cancelled flights between the US and Haiti amid escalating violence, as heavily armed gangs have tried to seize control of Haiti’s main international airport, Toussaint Louverture. According to statements seen by the Miami Herald, US air carriers American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines are among those to have cancelled flights to Haiti as the security situation – such that on 3 March the government declared a state of emergency after some 4,000 prisoners escaped in two mass prison breaks – continues to deteriorate. According to international press reports, Haiti’s government has deployed troops and police to the airport and Associated Press (AP) journalists saw “an armoured truck on the tarmac shooting at gangs to try and prevent them from entering airport grounds as scores of employees and other workers fled from whizzing bullets”. The AP report notes that it wasn’t immediately clear as of late yesterday whether the attack on the airport was successful.
