Migrant kidnapping on the rise

Migrants face a multitude of dangers when crossing Mexico. One such danger – kidnapping – was thrown into the spotlight in recent weeks with the abduction of over 30 migrants on 30 December and “rescue” of over 60 migrants on 11 January, both in the border state of Tamaulipas. The kidnapping and extortion of migrants is an increasing problem in parts of Mexico, exacerbated in no small part by stringent US migration policies.
