GUATEMALA: Arévalo halts transition after TSE offices raided again

President-elect Bernardo Arévalo denounced “flagrant crimes of abuse of authority for electoral purposes” in response to raids carried out this week on facilities of the electoral authority (TSE), by the discredited attorney general’s office (AG) in which scores of ballot boxes were reportedly opened. This signifies the latest attempt by those associated with the so-called ‘pacto de corruptos’ - an allusion to entrenched corruption in Guatemala’s political institutions - to derail the electoral process following Arévalo’s victory in the presidential run-off on 20 August. Widely condemned at home and abroad, the raids have led Arévalo, who has previously warned that a coup was underway, naming Attorney General María Consuelo Porras as a co-conspirator [WR-23-36], to suspend the transition, casting further doubt on what has been one of the most turbulent elections in Guatemala’s recent history.
