In brief: Mexico’s gov’t announces investment in new corn plant

*Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) has announced that local brewery Grupo Modelo and local food and beverage production company Millfoods are investing US$300m in the construction of a corn processing plant for beer production in Salamanca city, Guanajuato state. According to the SE, the project will generate more than 1,000 jobs and will benefit 20,000 corn producers across central Mexico, in what is known as the Bajío region. According to the SE press release, this will become the region’s largest and most advanced corn processing plant, and will include technology that will reduce water usage, making the process more sustainable. As part of the agreement with Millfoods, Grupo Modelo has committed to prioritising Mexican corn over imported corn at the new plant, as a way to support Mexican producers and promote the growth of the country’s agricultural industry.  Millfoods president, Pilar Gutiérrez, stated that the project also aimed to contribute to “food self-sufficiency and the economic and social development of Mexico”.
