* Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a package of decrees to re-launch the ‘Luz para Todos’ programme aimed at providing electricity to remote rural areas in northern Amazonian states. Luz para Todos was first implemented in 2003 and rolled out during Lula’s first two administrations (2003-2011). The launch event for the new programme took place in the municipality of Parintins, Amazonas state, which will be connected to the national electricity grid’s newly created Tucuruí line. Other municipalities that will be connected to this new line include Itacoatiara, also in Amazonas, and Juruti, in Pará state. The president also confirmed plans to connect Roraima state to the national grid, investing R$2.6bn (US$533m) for the construction of new energy infrastructure, which is expected to be completed in September 2025. Lula also signed other decrees to boost energy cooperation with neighbouring countries, such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Venezuela.
