In brief: Chile’s informal employment rate remains stagnant

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released new figures which show that the informal employment rate in the second quarter of 2023 stood at 27.2%, up 0.1 percentage points as compared to the same period of 2022. The number of people employed informally in Q2 2023 was 2.46m, a 2.5% increase year-on-year. In quarterly terms, the informal employment rate was up 0.4 percentage points on the first quarter of the year. By economic sector, the increase in the number of informally employed people was mainly driven by agriculture, livestock, forestry & fishing (9.4%) and professional, scientific & technical activities (41.4%). By occupational group, the increase was mainly driven by workers in services & commerce (6.2%), and professionals, scientists & intellectuals (17.5%).
