VENEZUELA: Fourteen vie to challenge Maduro

Fourteen presidential aspirants registered this week to compete in the primary elections of Venezuela’s opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) on 22 October. Whether they all make it that far will depend on several factors, not least signs of popularity. If any candidate looks like galvanising public support it is probable that the government will follow precedent and bar them from competing on spurious grounds.
