* Peru’s economy & finance ministry (MEF) has approved extraordinary measures to permit the defence ministry to carry out interventions of preparation and response to limit the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon for the regions of Amazonas, Áncash, Cajamarca, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Piura, San Martín, and Tumbes where a state of emergency has been declared. The MEF has assigned the transfer of over PEN196m (US$54m) to finance the acquisition of mechanical engineering equipment, vehicles to provide logistical support, and technical support equipment and related spending. This follows the announcement earlier this month that the government led by President Dina Boluarte had approved PEN1.2bn in spending to address the impact of this year’s El Niño weather phenomenon.
