HONDURAS: Castro pays first official visit to China, meets Xi

President Xiomara Castro met her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping last week in what was her first trip to China since her government announced its decision in March to switch diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to Beijing [WR-23-13], leaving just Guatemala and Belize as Taipei allies in the sub-region. Castro’s six-day visit produced a string of agreements on trade, investment, and other cooperation, signs of a burgeoning relationship which is likely to be closely followed by the US, amid concerns of Beijing’s growing influence in the region – as most recently underlined by the furore over claims of a new China spying facility in Cuba [WR-23-24].
