COLOMBIA: Petro under pressure in congress and on streets

The scandal that erupted following the leaking of messages suggesting illegal financing in President Gustavo Petro’s election campaign now seems to be making itself felt in the legislature, where Petro is losing control of his unwieldly alliance. On 20 June Petro suffered two serious blows in congress, acknowledging that his labour reform bill may have been ‘sunk’ on the same day that the senate rejected a government-supported bill to legalise the sale of marijuana for recreational use.
