Venezuela’s national electoral council (CNE) is set to be overhauled after its nine members announced their resignation over the past week. The motives for the mass resignation remain unclear. However, the swift announcement from the national assembly that it will replace the entire council, with First Lady Cilia Flores playing a leading role in the selection process, has sparked concerns that the government is orchestrating the installation of an even more loyalist CNE ahead of next year’s presidential election.
