BOLIVIA: Key minister escapes censure

Bolivia’s justice minister, Iván Lima, narrowly avoided censure by congress on 31 May after a vote that fell just shy of the requisite two-thirds majority to remove him. Lima clung on to his post after a long debate that raged for over 11 hours covering issues such as the politicisation of the judiciary and the alleged misuse of the provision of preventive detention to target government opponents, such as, most recently, Luis Fernando Camacho, the governor of the eastern region and opposition stronghold of Santa Cruz. But Lima was also caught in the crossfire of a bitter internal battle being waged within the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS).
