Ángel Luis Ríos Riquenes, the general director of the productive chain process for Cuba’s state-owned sugar company Azcuba, has warned that so far Cuba’s sugar harvest for 2022-2023 was 95,000 tonnes (t) down on the forecasted amount of 455,198t although he said that producing the 400,000t required to ensure domestic consumption this year is a commitment “
sustained” by Azcuba. He blamed the situation on breakdowns at sugar mills and equipment, and shortages of fuel, equipment, and machinery which he said was linked to difficulties “
of finance” and the economic embargo placed on Cuba by the US. Cuba’s sugar harvest in the 2021-2022 season came in at 474,000t almost half the preceding season's 800,000t, and only 52% of the official target.
