Ecuador’s government reached an agreement with the umbrella indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie) on 30 June, sacrificing core pillars of its economic agenda in order to end the civil unrest that had gripped the country over the previous 18 days. Some form of compromise with Conaie was always going to be necessary. But President Guillermo Lasso’s U-turns on several of his key goals appear to have alienated some in his cabinet.
