In brief: Mexico’s IMSS hails recovery of formal sector

* Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) has released new figures which show that a record 174,094 formal jobs were created in September this year, an increase of 0.9% compared with August and the highest increase for the month of September since records began. These figures mean that between January and September 2021, 821,187 total jobs were created in Mexico’s formal sector, while over the last 12 months 892,727 new jobs were created, equivalent to an annual increase of 4.5%. The transport & communications sector saw the greatest annual increase in jobs creation (10.7%). According to the IMSS, as of 30 September 20.59m jobs were registered in the formal sector – equivalent to 99.9% of 20.6m jobs registered in February 2019, a year before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic hit.
