* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest report on the country’s balance of payments, which reveals that gross external debt was estimated at US$269.16bn as of 30 June this year. While still high, this is US$324m less than at the close of the first quarter of 2021. Argentina holds 97% of its external debt in foreign currency, and 66% of the total in US dollars. According to Indec,
“the decrease observed in the balance was principally due to the US$1.05bn [decrease in the] debt in the general government sector (because of amortisations of short-term instruments and transactions in the secondary market between residents and non-residents)”. However, at market value, Argentina’s stock of external debt has grown, as it was estimated to total US$218.62bn as of end of June, an increase of US$2.32bn compared with the previous quarter.
