* Costa Rica’s central bank (BCCR) has published its latest monthly economic activity index (IMAE), which showed a 10% year-on-year increase in July, up 17.2 percentage points on the same month in 2020. The BCR notes that this was the highest year-on-year growth for a month since September 1992 (10.4%), while pointing out that this increase is largely due to the low base of comparison due to measures taken to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) a year earlier. According to the BCCR, Costa Rica’s GDP contracted by 4.1% in 2020 while in its 2022 budget proposal the finance ministry is forecasting growth of 3.9% in 2021.
