In brief: Brazil creates new state-owned energy entity

* Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has issued a decree which establishes the creation of the Empresa Brasileira de Participações em Energia Nuclear e Binacional SA (ENBpar), a firm that is linked to the ministry of mines & energy (MME) and will operate as a limited company. The creation of ENBpar is in line with a law, approved by congress in June, which outlines the conditions for the privatisation of the state-controlled energy company Eletrobras. The new entity has been created with the objective of maintaining the operation of Brazil’s nuclear plants and of the Itaipu hydroelectric dam, which is jointly managed with Paraguay, under state control once Eletrobras is privatised.
